TYPE LOCALITY: Mozambique, Querimba coast and Tette, about 10°30' to 12°S, 40°30'E, sea level .
DISTRIBUTION: Mouth of the Congo River to Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, W and S Tanzania, Mozambique, and South Africa. Sympatric with H. cristata .
STATUS: Common.
SYNONYMS: capensis, prittwitzi, stegmanni, zuluensis.
COMMENTS: Subgenus Hystrix . Revised by Corbet and Jones (1965); see Van Weers (1983).
