COMMENTS: Reviewed by Honeycutt et al. (1991). The family has been traditionally divided into two subfamilies: Bathyerginae with grooved upper incisors ( Bathyergus); and Georychinae with ungrooved upper incisors ( Cryptomys, Georychus, Heliophobius, Heterocephalis). Honeycutt et al. (1991:59) did not support such groupings.
