TYPE SPECIES: Hoplomys truei J. A. Allen, 1908 (= Echimys gymnurus Thomas, 1897).

COMMENTS: Revised by Handley (1959a). Patton and Reig (1989:90) demonstrated that this genus is very close to Proechimys, and may be congeneric.
