TYPE SPECIES: Schizodon fuscus Waterhouse, 1842 .

COMMENTS: Reig (1986:408) noted that Aconaemys is not separable from the Pliocene/ Pleistocene form Pithanotomys Ameghino, 1887 at the generic level. If indeed the two are not separable, Pithanotomys would have priority as a name over Acomaemys.
