Proechimys J. A. Allen, 1899 . Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 12:257.

TYPE SPECIES: Echimys trinitatis J. A. Allen and Chapman, 1893 .

SYNONYMS: Trinomys .

COMMENTS: Traditionally divided into 2 subgenera ( Proechimys with 9 species groups distributed in most areas of tropical South America, and Trinomys with four species distributed in Eastern Brazil). This group is very complex with many species and subspecies. Reviewed, in part, by Reig et al. (1980:291-312), Gardner and Emmons (1984), and Patton (1987). May include Hoplomys (see Patton and Reig, 1989). The specific level taxonomy of the group is controversial, and is in need of a major revision. Most of the named forms in Corbet and Hill (1991) and Nowak (1991) are used here pending a revision of the group.
