Type locality. Described from Mediterranean (“nostri mari”).
Remarks. Monterosato (1890a: 148, 149) introduced T. mediterranea as the correct name for the Recent species erroneously identified by his contemporaries as “ Turritella triplicata Brocchi, 1814 ”, the latter being a Tertiary fossil species. Recorded by MolluscaBase (2018) as a synonym of Turritella communis Risso, 1826, which is clearly wrong. Although the possibility that it represents a fourth distinct species in the Mediterranean (as held by e.g. Parenzan, 1970) is worthy of further testing (ideally by genetic data), we adopt the conservative position of including T. mediterranea in the synonymy of T. turbona Monterosato, 1877 [new synonymy].

Type locality. Described from Santa Flavia † (Sicily).
Remarks. A name introduced with a description in a work on the Quaternary fossil shells of Santa Flavia, near Altavilla (Sicily), to distinguish a species similar to T. triplicata Brocchi, 1814, but thinner and with flatter whorls. Recorded by MolluscaBase (2018) as taxon inquirendum. It may represent a distinct fossil species.
