Distribution: Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil (Amapá, Pará, and Maranhão), Trinidad.
Type-locality: Brazil, Pará.
Diagnosis: Relatively large specimens (13.5–20.2 mm). Narrow frons (FI: 4.5–6.4), parallel or convergent at the base (DI: 1.0–1.4). Wing hyaline or uniformly light brown infuscated. Scutum and scutellum covered by pale grayish pruinosity. Abdomen integument light yellow to pale greenish, olive green, sometimes with dorsomedial and dorsolateral pale setulose spots or stripes, when well preserved. Legs with brownish integument and mostly pale setulae.
Remarks: Tabanus olivaceiventris varies in size and wing color, some specimens having infuscated wings and the abdominal setulae may be black, yellow or have three pale stripes (Fairchild, 1984). Nevertheless, specimens are easily identified by the pale greenish abdomen integument and most often have hyaline wing. The type of T. olivaceiventris is lost (Fairchild, 1984) and the species description available so far is short. It is, however, relatively common in northern South America and Fairchild’s (1984) morphological discussion is enough for identification. The male is paler, with the abdomen densely covered by white setulae, and the enlarged facets occupy half of the eyes and are fairly well-differentiated from the smaller facets, but not well-demarcated (Fairchild, 1984). The distribution of T. olivaceiventris largely overlaps the known distribution of Tabanus comosus and partially fits the Northwestern Amazonia track of Amorim & Pires (1996).
